Constraints on Bend‐Faulting and Mantle Hydration at the Marianas Trench From Seismic Anisotropy

چکیده

Subduction zones are a key link between the surface water cycle and solid Earth, as incoming plate carries pore hydrous minerals into subsurface. However, fluxes from to subsurface reservoirs over geologic time highly uncertain because volume of carried in slab mantle is poorly constrained. Estimates hydration based on seismic tomography assume bulk serpentinization, representing an upper bound volume. We measure azimuthal anisotropy near Marianas Trench, use spatial variations constrain extent geometry bend-related faulting, place lower content for case where serpentinization confined within fault zones. The observations can be explained by minimum ∼0.85 wt% mantle, compared ∼2 obtained tomography.

Constraints on lithosphere net rotation and asthenospheric viscosity from global mantle flow models and seismic anisotropy

[1] Although an average westward rotation of the Earth’s lithosphere is indicated by global analyses of surface features tied to the deep mantle (e.g., hot spot tracks), the rate of lithospheric drift is uncertain despite its importance to global geodynamics. We use a global viscous flow model to predict asthenospheric anisotropy computed from linear combinations of mantle flow fields driven by...

Constraints on Subduction Geodynamics from Seismic Anisotropy

[1] Much progress has been made over the past several decades in delineating the structure of subducting slabs, but several key aspects of their dynamics remain poorly constrained. Major unsolved problems in subduction geodynamics include those related to mantle wedge viscosity and rheology, slab hydration and dehydration, mechanical coupling between slabs and the ambient mantle, the geometry o...

Inferences on flow at the base of Earth's mantle based on seismic anisotropy.

We applied global waveform tomography to model radial anisotropy in the whole mantle. We found that in the last few hundred kilometers near the core-mantle boundary, horizontally polarized S-wave velocities (VSH) are, on average, faster (by approximately 1%) than vertically polarized S-wave velocities (VSV), suggesting a large-scale predominance of horizontal shear. This confirms that the D" re...

Seismic constraints on temperature of the Australian uppermost mantle

We derive estimates of temperature of the Australian continental mantle between 80 and 350 km depth from two published S-velocity models. Lithospheric temperatures range over about 1000 8C, with a large-scale correlation between temperature and tectonic age. In detail however, variations ranging from 200 to 700 8C occur within each tectonic province. At the current seismic resolution, strictly ...
